MEET THE SPEAKERS

  • Dr. Shawn Kao is a community pediatrician practicing in Etobicoke and Brampton with a main focus in Behavioural Pediatrics. Dr. Kao's interest and passion for children's mental health and developmental challenges has led to his current role as the Medical Director, Treatment Research and Education for Autism and Developmental Disorders (TRE-ADD). Dr. Kao is the current Tariff Chair and Major Events Co-Chair for the Pediatrics Section, OMA and was also a past Peer Assessor for the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). As the Chair of the Section’s Major Events Planning Committee, he would like to extend a warm welcome and thank you to this year's attendees of the Annual General Meeting & Celebration of Pediatrics!

Dr. Shawn Kao

Hasan Merali, MD, MPH, is an associate professor in the
Department of Pediatrics, McMaster University and a
pediatric emergency medicine physician at McMaster
Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. He received his
medical degree from Harvard Medical School and Master of
Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. His
research focuses on child injury prevention in low- and
middle-income countries. He has published more than
twenty-five peer-reviewed journal articles, and his work has
been featured in The New York Times, BBC, CNN, Science,
Medium, The Boston Globe, NBC, CBC, HuffPost, and
Popular Science.


Dr. Hasan Merali

  • Dr. Ripudaman Singh Minhas is a Developmental
    Paediatrician and Director of Pediatric Research at St.
    Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, and an Assistant
    Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. His
    research interests are in the development, behaviour,
    disability, and rehabilitation of children in urban settings and
    in newcomer immigrant and refugee families. He is currently
    working to develop interventions to support the
    developmental potential of children in the unique context of
    their social determinants of health and inequity. His team
    uses Community-Based Participatory Research principles to
    guide the co-creation and implementation of family-based
    interventions and the evolution of health systems.

Dr. Ripudaman Minhas

Dr. Jane Healey brings a wealth of experience and expertise
to her new role as Chair. Joining the Pediatrics Section as
Member at Large, Dr. Healey has demonstrated exceptional
leadership qualities in her participation in the Section’s
Negotiations and Tariff Committees. Dr. Healey has
continued to serve as the Section's representative and
delegate on the OMA’s Priority and Leadership Group.
Additionally, she has been an integral member of both the
OMA’s Compensation Panel and the Education and
Prevention Committee (EPC), a bilateral committee of the
Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ontario Medical
Association (OMA).

In her professional capacity, Dr. Healey is a highly respected
hospital-based pediatrician at Trillium Health Partners in
Mississauga. She is best known for co-founding the Physician
Financial Independence online community with her husband,
Dr. Paul Healey. This platform serves as a neutral and non-
biased source of financial information for Canadian
physicians, reflecting Dr. Healey's commitment to promoting
financial literacy and reducing burnout in medicine.


Dr. Jane Healey

Dr. Danby completed her undergraduate degree at the University
of Windsor, followed by an MD degree at the University of Western
Ontario. She completed her residency in Paediatrics at Western
University. She currently is part of the Community Paediatric
Department at LHSC, and owns a community clinic in London
called MD Pediatrics. She also does consults via Ontario eConsult
Service and with My Pediatric NP. She is a part of the
Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum Committee at
Western as co-chair of the Foundations of Medicine course. She is
also on several committees to help with transition planning for
pediatric patients transitioning to adult care, and is specifically an
advocate for patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities. She is
an active preceptor in the community for medical students,
residents, and nurse practitioner students. In her spare time, she
enjoys traveling, camping, interior decorating, and fitness with the
Canadian Women Physicians Fitness Community.


Dr. Michelle Danby

  • Dr. Fatima Bhetasi, is the Section’s Treasurer and is a community pediatrician practicing in Welland. Dr. Bhetasi holds additional roles as President of the Niagara South Medical Society, and represents the Pediatrics Section as a PLG Delegate.
